Short description of the work
Polished block sections of two different geological samples were exposed to Np(V) containing synthetic cement leachate (pH 10.5) in a flow cell reactor for up to 8 days each. One specimen was a sandstone containing Fe(III) oxide coatings. The other was a fault gauge material containing Fe(II) bearing minerals. The synthetic cement leachate represents the groundwater composition expected around a cementitious repository for radioactive waste in the late post-closure stage. The experiments were kept anaerobic throughout the contact time inside of an Ar atmosphere glove box (< 1ppm O2). Upon conclusion of the experiments, the Np-exposed specimens were analysed via autoradiography to quantify uptake of Np onto the specimens’ surface and also to determine the location of any Np hotspots. Both samples showed evidence for Np hotspots that will be analysed using µ-XAS and µ-XRF techniques at the ANKA INE-Beamline to determine the Np speciation, oxidation state and preferential mineral associations within the heterogeneous geological materials.
