Short description of the work
Photo- and radiation-induced preparation of nanocrystalline uranium and/or thorium oxides (my dissertation thesis topic) is based on radiation induced formation of solid precursor in aqueous solutions containing uranium and/or thorium salts and hydroxyl radical scavengers.
The mechanism of precursors formation could be suggested based on the knowledge of the valence of uranium ions. Their valence, and moreover the possible impurities, can be determined using the EXAFS method and that is why a stay at Chalmers University of Technology was proposed (realized in June 2014).
Two sources of radiation were used for the preparation of solid phase:
- UV lamps - i.e. the source of radiation typically utilized (transported from CTU)
- Gammacell with dose rate 10 kGy/h (at Chalmers at disposal)
Using the EXAFS method, powders prepared under non-ionizing and ionizing radiation were compared.
Subsequent heat treatment of prepared precursors under various atmospheres led to the formation of nanocrystalline uranium and/or thorium oxides at minimum temperatures in the interval 300-550 °C. The materials consist of nanoparticles from 3 to 50 nm in diameter and with narrow size distribution.

This research work would not have been realized without TALISMAN funding and represents an essential contribution to my dissertation thesis.
