In the field of actinide science, networking at the European level is a strategic need for the development of knowledge, skills and infrastructures. The objective of this project is to provide access to external users certain parts of the facilities for training and research. This must be understood as the next step towards a robust sharing of facilities through an effort to standardise procedures and rules governing access to and work within these facilities. This will lead to a further integration and strengthening of the actinide community.

Originally built on national policies, the nuclear power industry is now mature and shares its objectives at the international level. The associated research infrastructures have to now follow a similar evolution, in order to attain the critical mass of knowledge, know-how, tools and skills, to share the costs, and to look for consensus on scientific matters.

Beyond collaboration among researchers, the challenge is now organizing a structural framework for the sustainable development of the European Research Area, through a policy of research infrastructures in Europe. Two main lines of actions need to be considered:

i) benefit from the complementarities of existing tools by implementing appropriate rules for their use, by ensuring their management at European level, and by granting access to a wider set of users, from academic researchers to industrial partners,

ii) stimulate the complementarities of the national tools by designing and implementing coherent European policies for their evolution and their future development.

It is therefore a major objective of the project to develop and reinforce a structure to manage a set of resources pooled for the benefit of the European Community of actinide science. The ACTINET-I3 pooled facilities have laboratories that allow users:

  • to handle radioactive materials at various levels of activity (hot cells, alpha-glove boxes);
  • to work in specific conditions (inert gas, high temperature,…),
  • to access analytical tools (elementary and isotopic analysis, liquid, solid and interface analysis etc.),
  • to use specific methods (laser spectroscopy, synchrotron radiation...),
  • to access expertise in modelling and simulation, education and means to support experimental work in actinide science.

The access to these facilities will encourage the development of joint research activities, and should therefore have a strong structuring effect.

These facilities can also be used in close cooperation with Collaborative Projects of the 7th FP related to ACTINET such as ACSEPT and F-BRIDGE.

Information exchange and potential cooperation will also be considered with similar networks of infrastructures, such as "J-ACTINET", recently established in Japan on the model developed by ACTINET under FP6, involving eight universities and two research organisations (JAEA, CRIEPI) devoted to actinide sciences.

Last but not least, the students and young researchers will also benefit from access to ACTINET-I3 facilities, and thus play a major role in the training of the next generation of actinide scientists and engineers.
